Define loads and future construction
Describe what will sit on the slab, including equipment, vehicles, walls and anchorage. Provide manufacturer information or approved plans where applicable. A shed, hot tub and building floor do not share a universal slab specification.
Set elevations and drainage
Finished height affects doors, surrounding grade and runoff. Confirm the planned transitions before excavation. A low site may require more than simply raising the concrete surface; drainage and neighboring property impacts also need consideration.
Coordinate work that becomes hidden
Utilities, reinforcement, moisture-control layers and embedded items must be resolved before placement where required. Identify who supplies the design and who checks that preparatory work is ready. Last-minute changes can disrupt the pour or require later cutting.
Confirm design and permit responsibilities
Some projects require structural details, permits or inspections. Establish those responsibilities before work starts. A flatwork contractor’s proposal should not be mistaken for engineering approval for an unspecified structure.
