Concrete Walkway Width & Layout Planning

Plan concrete walkway width and layout for a Spokane home around everyday routes, passing space, grade changes and the connection to entrances.

Map everyday routes

List the doors, parking areas and outdoor spaces the path should connect. Consider carrying bags, passing another person and moving a garden cart. The most useful layout may be wider or less direct than a simple line between two points.

Check transitions and grade

Review where the new walkway meets steps, a driveway and existing pavement. A new surface should not create an awkward lip at either end. If accessibility is a project goal, identify that early so the complete route and applicable requirements can be evaluated.

Account for planting and water

Roots, irrigation and downspouts can affect the walkway over time. Discuss tree protection and runoff before choosing the alignment. Avoid assuming a concrete path will solve a drainage issue merely by covering the ground.

Clarify private and public scope

Work on a private path differs from work on public sidewalk or an approach. Identify the property and right-of-way boundaries with the appropriate authority where needed. Include restoration, joint layout and finish in the written plan.
